Tourism in Saint Petersburg

Built on forty two islands, St. Petersburg and its beautiful canals, buildings, enchanting palaces and glorious monuments is certainly Russia’s most European city, and also the one with the richest tradition. St. Petersburg is unique: its strong personality and originality has captivated the minds of many an artist, writer and poet over the centuries, and even today, this monumental city still weaves a magic spell on those who visit it.

A good starting point is the impressive Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad) with the column of Alexander in the centre and near it, the Winter Palace built in the 18th century. This is a true masterpiece in the Rococo style that houses the prestigious Hermitage museum, whose gallery is considered to be one of the most complete in the world. On leaving the museum, you will come to the admirality yards, dating from the 19th century, with a length of more than 400m, and next to them, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Petersburg’s finest church, built in the 19th century, with 4 monumental portraits and a dome that is more than 100 metres high!
Going along the Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg’s main street, you will find, among other things, the old building of the Singer company in the Art-Nouveau style, and the 19th-century architectural wonder of Russian achievement that is the Cathedral of our Lady of Kazan which was based on St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. From there, leaving the avenue behind us for a moment, we come to the beautiful building of the Russian Museum in the Mikhaulovsky Palace, in the classic style, and the singular Church of the Saviour of the Spilt Blood, built between 1883 and 1907 in the site where Czar Alexander II was murdered. Inside it are 7,000 square metres of mosaics. Back on Nevsky Prospekt, admire the Hotel Europa, the wax museum in the Stroganov Palace and modern style shop of Eliseev, and the vaulted stores of Gostiny Dvor and the Alexandrinski Palace. From here if you wish, you can visit the Castle of the Engineers and the Summer Palace & Gardens of Petergoff, an elegantly-reformed architectural complex where the Czars spent the summer.

Last but not least, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Fortress of St. Peter and St. Paul, built on a tiny island where you will also find St. Peter and St. Pauls’s Cathedral which was also used as the cemetery of the imperial family.
